Food quality and safety (undergraduate) is a newly established major in China since 2002. So far, more than 100 colleges and universities have been approved and filed by the Ministry of Education to establish this major. Most colleges and universities focus on training application-oriented talents, and the majority of schools are able to grant engineering degrees to graduates from this major. Our university has been recruiting students since 2005. With the support of SWU, we have built a teaching team to train qualified talents in the major of food quality and safety for the country. This major was selected as the "first-class" major in Chongqing in 2019 and national "first-class" major in 2021.
The major of food quality and safety entails the whole process of food storage, transportation and processing from farmland to dining table. The chain of food production and processing is quite long and there are many aspects involved. The major has a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, law, and other disciplines. Moreover, the supporting disciplines, include at least five fields of knowledge, including agricultural science, food science, inspection science, nutrition and health, management science. Also, the major puts equal emphasis on scientific technology and management, including contents like food quality and safety, policies, regulations and standards, and so on. Therefore, this major is based on life science and food science. It studies the relationship between food quality, food safety and food health, focusing on the guarantee of food nutrition and the management of food safety and health across many disciplines. Last but not least, it centers on ensuring nutritional quality and health quality of food and promoting human health by the management and control of food production and processing.
